The Nigerian military announced on Sunday that it has cleared Damaturu-Biu road of mines and explosive devices.
Sani Usman, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement said the road was cleared by a team of Nigerian Army Special Forces, Explosives Ordinance Devices with support from Nigeria Police and members of local vigilante.
“During the painstaking and thorough operation, four Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists were discovered and successfully detonated,” he said.
Mr. Usman said the road, which links Yobe and Borno – two of the states most ravaged by the Boko Haram insurgency – had become safe for commuters to use. He also asked Nigerians to be more security conscious and report any suspicious persons and movements to the security agents.
Although Mr. Usman did not disclose the person(s) responsible for the mines, they are believed to have been planted by the Boko Haram, whose terrorist activities in Northern Nigeria have caused the death of at least 15,000 people.
